Event: Topical Event: Navigating a Bro-Culture in STEM, Coleen Carrigan
Friday, January 31, 2014, 12:15 – 1:30pm PST
Recent incidents have brought attention to the prevalence of a “bro-culture” in STEM fields, male-dominated environments that are hostile to women scientists and engineers. In this MFL lunch, Dr. Coleen Carrigan will facilitate a discussion on the multiple forms of gender harassment in STEM, how to support students and peers trying to successfully navigate bro-cultures and community strategies that recognize, combat and eradicate sexist behaviors in academic STEM workplaces.
Coleen Carrigan earned her Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Washington in 2013 and has been a researcher with the UW ADVANCE Center for Institutional Change for seven years. Her ethnographic research investigates the historical and cultural dimensions of women’s labor, the production of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the social mechanisms by which gender differentiated outcomes in STEM fields are reproduced. As a critical race feminist scholar, she works to discover and share strategies that eradicate the barriers excluding women from STEM and transform the powers of technology to advance social justice.
